Seamless, secure and scalable – in close collaboration with Deutsche Bahn, we helped conceptualise and implement a new content management system (CMS) for Bahn.de. The platform empowers editorial teams with greater flexibility and ease of use, while enhancing the digital experience for millions of users accessing travel updates, services and inspiration every month.

The result? An intuitive and scalable content platform, streamlined editorial workflows at Deutsche Bahn, and a smooth digital journey for end users.

Need

A new CMS to meet the highest security standards, optimize editorial workflows and improve the overall user experience.

Result

A tailored CMS that meets these challenges with precision and purpose.

Impact

A flexible and intuitive platform that guarantees maximum security – and a frictionless experience for millions of users, every single day.

THE CHALLENGE

Heart surgery on a live system

This CMS relaunch wasn’t just about updating the visual design or UX structure. It was about creating a more accessible and satisfying user experience on Bahn.de – without disrupting daily operations.

The stakes were high: with around 50 million monthly visits (as of 2024), the new system needed to operate flawlessly while meeting strict compliance and security standards. No downtime, no compromises.

What we did

A CMS that optimises workflows and enhances journeys

Together with Deutsche Bahn’s teams, we began with a deep dive into the existing CMS – analysing outdated features, inefficient editorial processes and system security. Based on this, we defined the requirements for a solution that simplifies content creation, enables custom functions and meets the highest data protection standards.

The proposed solution: a robust, flexible and user-friendly CMS, tailored to the needs and goals of Deutsche Bahn.

Once the system was selected, we supported the content migration, transferring existing assets into the new environment. We restructured the site navigation, redesigned content flows, and enhanced editorial workflows and user journeys alike. Our team developed new features like the “Holiday Quickfinder” and the real-time “Traffic Updates”, based on UX and usability analyses.

We also modernised page templates, components and modules across Bahn.de – integrating interactive features like video and survey modules to strengthen engagement.

How we did it

Sprints in co-creation

Over the course of multiple agile sprints and thousands of story points, we worked across functions and organisations. UX and development teams collaborated closely to ensure seamless handovers and fast issue resolution.

This wasn’t a classic client-agency setup. We worked as one team – building mutual trust, creating shared ownership, and challenging ourselves to think beyond isolated tasks. At every stage of the CMS migration, we focused on delivering measurable value.

The result

A brand-new CMS with a focus on flexibility, usability and forward-looking technologies. With modular templates and intuitive components, the platform supports editorial teams in creating content faster and with less effort.

Its clean, modern UI simplifies daily work while supporting Deutsche Bahn’s long-term goals: future-readiness, compliance, and scalability.

What we learned

Working closely with Deutsche Bahn, we successfully combined deep technical implementation with the creation of a high-performing platform. The key takeaway: flexible CMS architectures and user-defined functionality are essential to meet the evolving needs of modern content teams and end users.

Together with our partner Deutsche Bahn, we’re proud to have demonstrated, just how far trust and seamless teamwork can go when collaboration is constructive, even across external teams. With this project, we not only showcased our technical expertise, but also proved that by leveraging smart processes, the right toolset, and a close partnership, we can deliver outstanding results as part of a large-scale DB initiative.
